#107 My favourite books of 2017 ... so far

So we are somehow halfway through the year so with my trusty goodreads challenge at hand I thought I'd share my favourite books of the year so far!

(I'm going to order them by date read)

Wing Jones, Katherine Webber ★★★★★

This was the second book I read in 2017 and I still can't stop thinking about it! Wing Jones is stunning both inside and out. All about family, a biracial protagonist and running (yes running) Wing Jones is a book I urge you all to read - here's my full review from back in January!

“He shakes his head, laughing softly, his bumblebee laughter surrounding me.”

Unconventional, Maggie Harcourt ★★★★★
Again another book I read early in the year (start of February) that I can't stop thinking about! Unconventional is one of those wonderful fluffy books with a satisfying slow burning relationship. Full review here!
“Funny things, words. Big words, small words; words that are bigger on the inside and packed tight with feeling. They can make us fall in love, and they can break our hearts and we’re powerless against them.”

Margot & Me, Juno Dawson ★★★★★
I absolutely adore this book, set in Wales in the 1990s with a wonderfully stubborn protagonist who finds her grandma's diary from her time as an evacuee. Set across the two time periods the book explored family in such an interesting way!

"Over time, we teach ourselves to stop feeling. It's the only way we survive."

The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas ★★★★★
The book EVERYONE is still talking about and rightly so! Inspired by the Black Lives Matter routine this book is contemporary at it's best! I had the pleasure of meeting Angie back in April and it was so wonderful just listening to her talk about her life and of course the book!
“You can destroy wood and brick, but you can't destroy a movement.”

The Last Summer of Us,  Maggie Harcourt  ★★★★★
The second book by Maggie on this list! The Last Summer of Us was released in 2015 but I only read it this year and devoured it!
Taking place during a road trip, this is a story about loss, regret and friendship it's such a quick easy read that I fell in love with!
We are not our histories, however deep they cut or however much they scar us. Whatever guilt we feel, rightly or wrongly, whatever baggage we carry, it is not all that we are."

One Italian Summer, Keris Stainton  ★★★★★
Another summery book! The books follows three sisters after the death of their dad on their annual trip to Italy. Full of love, grief, One Italian Summer is wonderful and heartbreaking all at once! Shout out to my gal Keris for writing this book!

"He looks so alive, so happy, so Dad"

The Upside of Unrequited, Becky Albertalli ★★★★☆
Ah, this book with all it's amazing representation and scarily relatable characters! I fell in love with this book and it's such a perfect contemporary! Read my full review here!

“I’ve had crushes on 26 people, 25 of whom are not Lin-Manual Miranda.”

The Fallen Children, David Owen ★★★★★
Full of suspense and supernatural happenings the book still feels incredibly raw and so very real! This book is completely different to everything else on this list but I just couldn't put it down!
"Violence sizzles in the air. It's terrifying. Also kind of exciting"

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe ★★★★★
You already know that I devoured this book. Written by my favourite author The Loneliest Girl follows Romy, the only surviving member of a crew on her way to a new planet. This is one of those books that's hard to talk about without giving anything away but The Loneliest Girl in the Universe is so different to anything Lauren has written before but it's still so distinctly her! Please read it when it comes out in September!

"I've only ever known its clean white walls; its sterilized atmosphere and artificial gravity; its low, grey rooms curving around the ship's hull"

Please let me know in the comments some books you've loved so far this year!

  1. I love the quote from The Loneliest Girl In The World, that makes me want to read that book so badly!
