#119 January reading wrap up 2018
We did it guys, we made it through the longest month known to (wo)man! To celebrate I thought I'd kick off the month with a brand new blog post - finally!
For some reason, I felt like I hadn't read that much last month but I somehow read five great books!
For some reason, I felt like I hadn't read that much last month but I somehow read five great books!
Beautiful Broken Things, Sara Barnard - ★★★★☆
I kicked off January by finishing Beautiful Broken Things which I started right at the end of December. I loved this book, there's something so real and raw about Sara's writing and her characters feel so real as well - they are actually flawed and not these perfect unattainable girls!
Love, Hate & Other Filters, Samira Ahmed - ★★★★★
This is an #OwnVoice coming of age story that I absolutely adored! This is the perfect fluffy contemporary mixed with real-life issues, such as Maya and her family face Islamophobia. There is such a good balance between the sweet and lovely romance and the focus on racism and hate crimes! I would definitely recommend you pick this book up!
If You Could See Me Now, Keris Stainton
- ★★★★★
I ended up rereading this wonderful book when it was too dark in the car to read a physical book and once again I gave it five stars, although it was somehow better the second time around! Feel free to read my full review here!
Wild Blue Wonder, Carlie Sorosiak
- ★★★★★
Carlie is one of my favourite authors and one of my favourite people in general so when this beauty dropped through my letterbox with a card from Lauren James it's safe to say I was little blown away! I absolutely loved Wild Blue Wonder and it's one of those books that's definitely going to stay with me! The release date isn't until later in the year so expect a full review nearer the time!
Second Best Friend, Non Pratt
- ★★★★★
I read Second Best Friend in one sitting, it's just that perfect little burst of wonderful writing! Again like Sara Non is one of those authors who knows how to write authentic characters and Non nailed it with Second Best Friend. I feel like most people can relate to this story as we've all probably been in the same position as the protagonist Jade - comparing yourself to the people you're closest too, saying things you didn't mean. This a short book, just like Unboxed by Non Pratt, and I'm always amazed at how much detail Non can fit into so little pages!
Ooo! This is such a great post! I've also managed to read five books in January (probably helped along by the fact it was the LONGEST MONTH EVER) and I'm trying to carry on reading as much for the rest of the year. I haven't heard of these books, I'm going to add them to my list!

Lovely post, I couldn't dream of getting through 5 books in a month so well done ☆ I've not heard of any of these books but will definitely be looking into them as I'm hoping to expand my horizons and read more this year & not just Young Adult books all the time!

I do quite a bit of commuting so being able to zone out and delve into a book is how I end up reading as much as I do! All but one of these (If You Could See Me Now) are actually young adult!

Oooh i've never heard of carrie so that is definitely one to look out for!
ReplyDeleteI'm also sold by what you said on Beautiful Broken Things and the "flawed characters", as that's what sometimes puts me off a book. It's a skill to find the balance, but when you do it's truly magical. I felt like that with reading Game of Thrones as a book, he really does get it so spot on with characterisation.
